The Association of Young Researchers
The postdocs and PhD students at the Danish Cancer Institute have formed an association to tackle and discuss their common challenges and needs as young researchers
The Association of Young Researchers represents all PhDs and Postdocs at the Danish Cancer Institute (DCI), and is run by a board of volunteer PhD students and Postdocs.
As per September 2023, AYR represents 44 PhDs and 46 Postdocs affiliated at DCRC, as well as a number of master students and visiting PhDs.
The purpose of the association is to assess the needs and opinions of the young researchers to maximize the experience as well as the professional development of the entire PhD and Postdoctoral community at the DCRC. Therefore, AYR meets with the Research Director, Mads Melbye, four times each year to discuss important matters for young researchers.
As illustrated by the yearly planner, the AYR organizes several events throughout the year, e.g.: career-oriented seminars / talks, scientific workshops, and social events.
The fall of 2023, the AYR hosted an event with the title ”Social Media Outreach – Promoting Your Science through LinkedIn/Instagram”, and we plan to create similar events in the future, as Social Media is increasingly important in the communication of research. Other examples of previous events hosted by the AYR are “Talk like TED”, a poster presentation course, and a photo session for professional portraits.
The Friday Bar Committee at AYR hosts a Friday Bar monthly with the purpose of forming social relations and exchanging experiences and ideas. All researchers are welcome and no registration is needed, invitations are sent out via E-mail.
Currently the AYR is also working in close collaboration with the Research Director, Mads Melbye, to make sure the work environment for young researchers continues to be of the highest standard.
